Safe First Exercises in the Days Following Oral Surgery

It should be noted outright that exercising right after oral surgery, especially if you were sedated during the procedure, will cause bleeding, pain and swelling.

In fact, we won't even advise you to just lie down and rest and refrain from doing any strenuous activity. Complications may arise that will force you to come see us again for treatment. In fact, engaging in any physical activity is not recommended until after a minimum of five days or when the wound has sufficiently healed.

What Type of Exercises Are Recommended After Oral Surgery?

Mouth and jaw exercises, which are considered low impact, can already be performed after three or four days (depending on the advice of the dentist) in order to avoid stiffness.

We can show you how to do these very simple exercises which will take only minutes to perform. Also, there are plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube, which you can follow in the comforts of your home.

The best advice is to listen to your body. There are visible signs as well, such as a clear healing of the wound, the swelling has reduced, or you can no longer feel the pain. At this point, refrain from lifting weights and focus on cardio up until we give you the go signal.

If you are taking any kind of pain medication, that can mess up your body's response to the soreness from the oral surgery. You may think that you're already healed, however, the truth is, you might not be. To be sure, you start physical activity after you've taken all the pain medication for the prescribed period.

Be on the lookout, however, for swelling, numbness or bleeding. If a little rest or ice packs won't do anything, better visit our clinic right away so we can address this complication.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (775) 430-5355 today.
