Ways of Reducing Swelling Following TMJ Surgery

Posted on 4/23/2018 by Scott Redlinger
TMJ Surgery Reno-Tahoe Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center NV 89511-3022Temporomandibular joint or TMJ syndrome is an easy enough condition to treat as long as you see an oral or maxillofacial specialist at the earliest stages.

In most cases, TMJ does not require any surgery as it can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, ice packs, massage or addressing the source of your stress.

However, in some cases we may recommend surgery, as well, and the most common procedures are condylotomy, arthroscopy or discectomy.

Reducing the Swelling on the Affected Part

After a major surgery, you can expect swelling on your face, particularly close to the affected area.

There are ways to reduce the swelling such as ice packs and drinking the anti-inflammatory and non-steroidal medicine that the specialist prescribed to you.

In the first week at least, make sure that your head is elevated when you are sleeping on your back. Pillows with enough support should do the trick since you do not want to end up with a stiff neck in the process.

Exercise your lips, mouth and jaw. If there is discomfort, try to pucker and purse your lips first. Do not be stationary or stay in one spot for hours.

While walking around is recommended, make sure not to overextend yourself. Do not do any strenuous physical activity or lift heavy things while you are on recovery. This will slow down the healing process.

Also, make sure to drink plenty of liquid in order to flush the toxins out of your body. You can suck on chips of ice in the first few hours if opening your mouth proves to be too uncomfortable. Lastly, refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol until the wound has healed.

As long as you follow recommendations of our surgeons, you should be on your way to a full recovery in no time at all. Contact us if you suspect that you may have TMJ.
