Oral Cancer Risks Go Beyond Smoking

Posted on 7/20/2019 by Scott Redlinger
Oral Cancer Risks Go Beyond SmokingWhen people find out someone has any type of cancer, they always want to know if they were smokers. That is because tobacco use has been linked to many different types of cancer. It is one of the things that can increase the chance of developing oral cancer, but it is not the only risk factor that people need to consider.

Other Ways to Use Tobacco

There are many people who try to quit smoking by turning to other tobacco products. They may think this is a good choice, but that does not mean it reduces the risk of oral cancer. In fact, if a person chooses to start chewing on smokeless tobacco, they may find that their risk for oral cancer goes up.

Chewing tobacco can lead to a variety of different dental problems and almost all of them can lead to an increased risk of oral cancer. Although there is not a lot of information about it, it is probable best to avoid the vaping products because they could also end up having a link to oral cancer.

Risks Besides Tobacco

Even people who have never smoked or been around smoke can develop oral cancer. That is because there are other risk factors to know. The biggest one is genetics. A family history of cancer of any kind puts a person at a higher risk of oral cancer.

People that engage in excessive use of alcohol are at a higher risk of oral cancer. People with infections in the teeth and gums or that suffer from gum disease and periodontal disease will face a higher risk. If a person has had an STD, they put themselves at risk. These are some of the reasons behind smoking that anyone is at risk for oral cancer.

A higher risk does not guarantee you will get oral cancer. It only needs you need to be more vigilant in the screening for oral cancer. The earlier it is caught, the easier it is to treat.
