Your oral surgery date is on the horizon, and you are anxious to get it over with. While this is understandable, don’t forget to take some time to prepare for your surgery. You’ll thank yourself later if you are ready and know what to expect with your procedure.

The Night Before

The night prior to your oral surgery appointment, make sure to take some time to get yourself ready.

Finalize your transportation arrangements with your chaperone, as you likely won’t be able to drive yourself home after the procedure. Getting this detail ironed out ahead of time can ease anxiety on the day of your surgery.

You will also need to fast beginning this evening, although your oral surgeon will specify exactly how many hours. For outpatient oral surgeries 8-12 hours is common. In most cases, you won’t be able to eat or drink anything after midnight.

Consider What You’ll Eat After Surgery

Speaking of food – you’ll also want to consider what you will eat after your oral surgery procedure. It may be helpful to look through your refrigerator and pantry to see what options are available for soft foods so that you have plenty of time to run to the store if needed.

Soup and yogurt are good options for the first two days following your procedure, and you should be sure to stay away from hard items like pretzels or popcorn.

Healing Time

Typically it takes about 48 hours for your discomfort and swelling to subside after an oral surgery. When going through this phase of your recovery, it is in your best interest to relax and take it easy, and don’t do any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.
