You’ll want to be prepared to take care of yourself and your health once we send you home after having oral surgery.

An important part of doing this is making sure you have all your questions about the procedure answered. This is something you should do before we give you any anesthesia because it could lead to an amnesia-like effect.

Waking Up After Anesthesia

When you wake up after your dental procedure is over, you may feel slightly groggy or confused. Sometimes you may also feel nauseated, experience a dry mouth, or have a sore throat, shiver, be a bit sleepy, or vomit. None of these experiences should last for more than a few hours, but they’ll definitely wear off after about 24 hours. At this point all the medication should have been completely eliminated from your body.

Bouncing Back Faster

After your surgery, there are some things that you can do to help yourself feel better sooner. One of the main things is being certain to follow our instructions – even the minor ones that you may think of as unnecessary.

You should also eat the right foods. Your body needs plenty of Vitamin A and C to help it heal. Nevertheless, since we just operated on your mouth, you’ll want to make sure that you’re eating soft foods. This is why we recommend things like smoothies and eggs.

Increasing your fluid intake is also beneficial. Drinking more water will help flush your system while ensuring that you’re well hydrated. Generally, we recommend drinking 6 – 8 glasses of water.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to get up and get moving. You do need to be careful not to overdo it here – especially during the first 48 hours. If ever in doubt, make sure you have someone there who you can ask for help. Otherwise, you can always give us a call!
