Wisdom teeth are something of a mystery to most people. They know very little about them, but have a lot of misconceptions that go with them. It is important that you know what to expect when it comes to handling wisdom teeth and their removal. At Reno-Tahoe Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center, we strive to keep our wisdom teeth extractions as minimally invasive as possible.

This can help you be better prepared when they begin to come in for your oral surgery in Reno. Here are a few things that are important to know prior to your wisdom teeth erupting.

What To Know About Wisdom Teeth Removal

Typically, wisdom teeth start to come in between the ages of 17 and 22. They occasionally show up outside this window, but this is when the vast majority of wisdom teeth removal cases show up. Not all wisdom teeth that come in require extraction, either. When wisdom teeth do start to come in, they can cause dental issues and damage to your other teeth.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions that people tend to have about wisdom teeth. Many people need them extracted, but some people actually have enough room to safely have them in their mouth forever.

Some wisdom teeth only come in part of the way, or come in and push other teeth around. This is why the majority of wisdom teeth get extracted. If your wisdom teeth came in partially, or came in facing the wrong way, such as the roof of the mouth, then they will need to come out.

That is where we can come in to help. We have a lot of experience extracting teeth in general, specifically wisdom teeth.

Your recovery is also important to us, because removing impacted wisdom teeth is a major surgical procedure and needs the proper post-operative care.

Your general dentist may have noticed that it is time for you to have your wisdom teeth extracted. If you have issues with your erupting wisdom teeth, or even have problems with wisdom teeth that you have had for years, call us for a consultation. We can have you come in, take some x-rays, and perform a full examination for a potential wisdom teeth removal. From there, our team of oral surgeons in Reno can determine what the next steps would be, no matter if it is maintaining a close eye on them or extracting them.

How to Prepare for Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery

You should first know that this is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to go home the same day. We will administer sedation during the procedure, which means you’ll need someone to take you home after. Following the surgery, you’ll be on a soft food diet and having ice cream, smoothies and soup is something to stock up on from the store.

As the premier oral surgeon in Northern Nevada for wisdom teeth removal, we are proud to specialize in wisdom tooth extractions in Reno. The team at Reno-Tahoe Oral Surgery always wants to make sure the health of your mouth is on track for the future. We often offer Wisdom Teeth Days throughout each month as a way to make scheduling procedures a breeze for you or your loved ones.
